The Census 2006 Regional Profiles on this page are based on place of usual residence and are focussed on the labour market-related characteristics of Indigenous people (or of the general population, classified by Indigenous status). The Census is the best source for this purpose since estimates based on limited surveys can be subject to large sampling errors when restricted to a subgroup of the whole target population, such as Indigenous people.
Data on this page are available at national, State/Territory or regional level. The regional structure used here is based on the DEEWR administrative areas called Labour Market Regions (LMRs) and Employment Service Areas (ESAs) that have applied to employment service contracts since July 2009. Each of the following profiles is an Excel-based tool that presents relevant Census data in graphical format. All of these profiles use macros to process and display their data - macros must be enabled within your Microsoft Excel security settings for these profiles to work.
Indigenous Regional Labour Force Status and Employment Type Profiles

Unlike most of the Census data tools on SkillsInfo, which deal only with employed people and the characteristics of their employment, this file contains data on the whole population aged 15 years or more. All labour force data is cross linked with the indigenous status of the persons concerned.
The first tab of this Excel file contains a table that provides the numbers of people aged 15 years or more in the selected area in each type of employment, or who are unemployed or not in the labour force etc, by their Indigenous status (ie whether they identified themselves in the Census as Indigneous or not).
The chart on the first tab provides a graphical profile of Indigenous people in the selected area by showing the proportions of Indigenous people within each one of a range of Employment Type and Labour Force Status categories. These proportions are compared with the Indigenous proportion of the whole population aged 15 years or more, and the entire profile for the selected area is compared to the profile of Australia as a whole.
On the second tab of this Excel file, the first chart compares the unemployment rates for Indigenous and non-Indigenous people between the ESAs, LMRs or States and Territories within any selected region (LMRs, States/Terrories or national).
The second chart makes a similar comparison of the participation rates of Indigenous and non-Indigenous people between ESAs, LMRs or States and Territories in the selected region.
The third chart makes a similar comparison of the self-employment rates of Indigenous and non-Indigenous people. That is, the proportion of all employed people who are owner-managers of their own business.
