Census 2006

The Census of Population and Housing is undertaken every five years by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), most recently in August 2006. The Census aims to count every person in Australia on Census night and gather information about their key characteristics.

The data output from the Census is a valuable source of information about national, regional and local labour markets because it is derived from an actual count of persons rather than extrapolated from a sample survey.

As a result, the Census is often the only source of reliable statistical data for small geographical areas (for example, suburbs of a city); for specific combinations of characteristics, such as skilled Indigenous construction workers aged under 30 years employed in a region; or regional data relating to a single characteristic at its most detailed level (for example, sector of employment within an industry).

The links at the left hand side of this page will take you to a range of Excel-based tools that examine various aspects of national, State/Territory and regional labour markets using Census data in graphical format.  The number of profiles will be expanded as more data are provided by ABS and are incorporated into products suitable for SkillsInfo.

Additional Census data can be found on the Labour Market Information Portal. More information about Census data quality issues and the limitations of Census data can be found in the ABS Census Data Quality Statement
